(The Final) Things To Look Forward To

September 14th, 2009 by Romi

Hmmm...I wonder what this post is about

Fortunately, the recession is lifting; unfortunately, that eliminates the need for Screw You Recession. That is definitely not something to look forward to this week but the show must go on!

I’ve helped you fill your schedules with cheap awesomeness all summer long but now it’s your turn to do the searching. Look back to TTLFT 6 for a guide to finding really cool happenings nationwide all on your lonesome.

I love you too much to leave you empty handed so here are some super duper fall guides to keep you busy over the next little while (more…)

Things To Look Forward To (The Tenth)

September 7th, 2009 by Romi

Dear Diary,

It’s already the second week of September. Can you believe it? Here I am wearing my parka and UGG boots thinking a brisk fall breeze will knock me off my feet when another heat wave plagues Toronto. As you may have guessed, I’m sweating like a fat kid in a candy store. Perhaps I should shower. Nah, too lazy. Anyways, Diary, I figured I’d take advantage of this nice weather find some stuff to do outside.

This is what I have in mind:

Art Walk: The ROM hosts free themed walking tours of Toronto areas. This week, you can check out Yorkville and the Annex. I think this is fabulous. (more…)

Paradise Regained

September 1st, 2009 by George

14 years ago, almost to the day, I listened to ‘Pretty Hate Machine’ and decided that music was something I wanted to do with my life. I was a little late getting into the band, but it would become more of a soundtrack to my life rather than just another addition to my small collection at the time. Years later, when I was working at a factory packaging textbooks to be shipped out to schools, the album that got me through the bus ride would be Soundgarden’s ‘Badmotorfinger‘, but I would always come back to PHM and subsequent albums as my drug of choice.

Movies like ‘The Lost Boys’ and ‘The Crow’ entered the picture and I found myself becoming somewhat of a creature of the night, with a love for amusement parks at night to go along with the music that I felt expressed things that could only be achieved through sound and image. In short, this video is a bit of an homage to some of those little things that are important to me, but what about you? What’s your story?

I think music has the undisputed power to create memories that are unique and personal to us all. I’d love to hear some of yours.

Things To Look Forward To (Number 9, Number 9…)

August 31st, 2009 by Romi

Ah the day after Virgin Festival. So exhausted. I’ll probably just sit in my P.J.s and nap all day. Oh the life of a blogger.

Beyond today, I do eventually plan on leaving my house, and you should follow suit since there are a bunch of things to look forward to this week:

A guide to packing: A free seminar for those Torontonians who have the travel bug. I need this more than anyone. I am the queen of over packing / getting charged extra for my suitcase being overweight. When your suitcase weighs more than you, you know you have a problem.

Sky High: The Canadian International Air Show takes flight (more…)

Happy last week of August!

Okay, not happy at all. At least summer is only officially over in a couple weeks but when September rolls around, it always feels like the season has come to an end. There’s no use in being a sad panda though, there’s tons to look forward to in the upcoming months; heck, there’s a lot to look forward to this week!

Fresh Wednesdays—Local produce and live music! Check out the farmers’ market at Nathan Phillips Square and stick around for a performance by Dirty Dishes. (more…)

August 17th, 2009 by Romi

Remember the time summer only started feeling like summer in the middle of August? Yeahhh. Well, here are some things that you can do to enjoy the first week of hot weather we’ve had since June:

I Scream You Scream—Toronto’s NOW magazine and Halifax’s The Coast list the top ice cream joints in each city. I say we spend the next couple weeks trying out each delicious creamery to escape the humidity. You down?

Fall Fashion Gone Frugal—Vancouverites, from Friday-Sunday, the Scotiabank Dance Center hosts Spend On Trend, and exhibition of Canada’s hottest independent designers and a wicked fashion show! Tickets are only $3 online and $5 at the door.

Have You Heard About Volunteering?

August 12th, 2009 by D.J.
All right pal, now you're just milking it.

All right pal, now you're just milking it.

I noticed that Thade posted about volunteering earlier. I couldn’t agree with him more that volunteering is one of the most fulfilling things you can do in this life.

I volunteer pretty frequently myself. On Tuesdays, I give post-workout rub downs to the competitive Canadian Hot Girl team. Thursdays, I do unpaid stand-up comedy at the local funeral home. Saturdays, I stand on the boulevard of a local street and yell at speeding drivers as they zoom by. Nobody asks me to do that last one, but I feel the difference I am making with every obscenity and hard object thrown in my direction. (more…)

Things To Look Forward To (5)

Gd’afternoon! I hope those of you who are in provinces that have a civic holiday are enjoying your long weekend. Everyone else: sucks to be you! Just kidding, you’ll get your chance to mock us.

Happy August! I like August, mainly because my birthday is on the 21st (yes, I will accept your presents, thank you for asking), oh and Virgin Festival is at the end of the month (or this weekend if you live in Alberta!).

So what’s keeping the cheapskate Canucks busy this week?

Things To Look Forward To (IV)

July 27th, 2009 by Romi

ttlft4

September is a little over a month away but let’s not think about that. There’s still a lot of summer left to enjoy!

Here’s some fun cheapness to take advantage of this week:

Movie Night! —If you’re out east, head over to the Halifax Waterfront Boardwalk on the 31st for an outdoor screening of Harold And Maude. It’s shown on an inflatable screen, how cool is that! Admission is only $5.

Festival Of The Caribbean—Toronto’s 42nd Caribana festival is upon us this weekend. There will be a ton of free events, unique vendors and a really awesome parade. The festival brings over 1 million participants into the city making it a tried and true Toronto tradition.
