To Be Cheap Or Lazy, That Is The Question.

August 20th, 2009 by Thaddeus

I rather being lazy and cheap!

I rather be lazy and cheap!

Hey guys, so today I thought I would give you some tips on things that I do around the house to either be lazy or to be to cheap. I don’t know about you guys, but I love being lazy and I love being cheap (hopefully no potential girlfriends or bosses read this post) and I thought I would share some of my ingenious activities with you. So take the couple minutes to read this article because it will save you even more money and time then you ever thought of….. or at least some.

When it comes to eating or making pasta I always eat right out of the cooking pot instead of putting it on or plate or in a bowl. I mean I have no one to impress and it definitely saves me on the dishes. A friend of mine likes to take his shirt off while eating because he always seems to get that little stain on his white shirt, which means new shirts or more laundry. Eeek. I do suggest however that you bring a shirt if you go to a buffet, along with a container (which I advise to be an old margarine or butter container). I know you’ve heard it all before but try to sneak some calamari home for tomorrow’s lunch.

WASTE YOUR WASTE!

July 20th, 2009 by Lucas

Waste your waste!

Waste your waste!

I got several responses to my last post about the toilet paper wrap, including some replies online, which I’m not entirely surprised at. Any posts that include vivid details about bathroom activity and execution are bound to breed intrigue. Unfortunately, a week has passed and so far, no one has adopted the experiment. Check that; no one has reported doing the experiment and measuring the results, which doesn’t necessarily conclude that no one’s doing it. They may simply be too embarrassed. I know you’re out there! Flying And (Not) Buying

Mile High Discount Club

I’m making a non-cheapskate move this weekend: I’m flying to Boston to visit one of my BFFs. Sometimes, we need to get out of town and the farther you go, the higher the price tag. We all deserve a little vacation so splurging is sometimes (but rarely) appropriate. I am flying out of Buffalo which saves me almost $300 so there is some saving going on, I promise.

If you do happen to be travelling via winged machine in the near future, I have some packing tips for you as to avoid unnecessary costs on the way to your destination and during your trip.

Frugality Rock

July 10th, 2009 by Melissa

What is frugality? To all of us here at SYR, its how we live our lives, whether we like it or not.

According to renowned feminist Wendy McElroy, frugality causes you to reverse the way you think about material things. So - what does this mean in this economy, to all of us recessionistas out there? Well, in this context, anything can be frugal - as long as it is resourceful and brings you closer to your goals.

Anyhow, the other day I was getting ready to head out to meet some friends for some cream sodas and I realized that I simply didn’t have any shoes that matched my ensemble. Oh no! I proclaimed, what to do?

Zen And The Art Of Grocery Shopping

July 7th, 2009 by Romi

Turning grocery bills into nothingness

Turning grocery bills into nothingness

We’ve hammered this into your brains many times: It’s cheaper to buy groceries and cook than it is to dine out. Just switching to eating in will save you tons of money but how can you save even more?

Here are some ancient Zen proverbs that will guide you in your quest to shrink your grocery bill:

Beach on a Budget

June 25th, 2009 by Thaddeus

Fact: fat kids love ice cream

Fact: kids love ice cream. Fat kids especially

Sun, girls, volleyball, soccer, waves, ice cream… Oh, I have to say, I love the beach. No, I don’t mean the movie called The Beach, with Leonadro DiCaprio if you even know what I’m talking about, but I mean the hot, fun and wet beach. I’ve always loved the beach; that’s why I’ve said the word beach so much thus far (I’ll try to stop now). Whether it’s just yourself, you and your partner, or even your whole family, there’s a few ways where you can save money without having to sacrifice any of the fun, and it all comes down to food.

Growing up I always had a sweet tooth, I still do, and part of the fun going to the beach on nice summer days was getting an ice cream. You’ve seen it happen many times, where kids come back having spent your five bucks on ice cream, half they have eaten and half they are wearing on their hands, face, and somehow behind their ears. This summer screw the recession, don’t deprive them or yourself of the miraculous invention of ice cream, just buy it beforehand and shove it in a cooler with some ice. You can get ice cream, donuts, candy, and all other sort of sweets for usually 75% cheaper from the grocery store and everyone can still indulge.

From someone with past experience, please, oh please pack fun lunches to go along with your junk food. If the lunch you pack is fun and delicious it will keep everyone  from wanting to buy burgers, fries, and anything else from the shops, as they will be totally satisfied and excited about the food you brought from home. I loved when I was a kid, going to the cooler and getting the most exciting, vibrant and tasteful ham sandwich on plain white bread. Not! It wouldn’t satisfy me at all but only make me start to lick my lips for grease… mmm… grease… So pack some buns, vegetables, crackers , some of the household favorites, and whatever you can find on the special section at the grocery store so that everyone can be happy with what you brought and not have to spend a week’s worth of groceries at the nearest snack bar.

Even though food is definitely the easiest way to save money at the beach, it’s important to point out that staying busy can keep your mind off spending money. Bring the volleyball, make a sand castle, see if you can bury mom or dad in the sand (maybe give dad some boobs), and have planned activities, especially if you have a family. This way you’re always busy keep you away from snack bars and rental places along the beach.

Canadian Geographic spoke about some great beaches in Canada. Check them out and plan your day!

I know I’ll be hitting up the beaches this summer with my buddies and a football, well prepared for a perfect execution of the ‘go long’ routine. Watch out ladies!

Just kidding, but seriously.

Green For Less Green

June 23rd, 2009 by Romi

This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend the Eco Savvy Festival in Toronto. Often people consider being ‘green’ to be an expensive endeavour. Although most of us cannot afford to convert our houses to solar energy or to buy a hybrid car (or a car in general), there is a ton that you can do to save the environment and save money at the same time. Check out the video for some valuable and inexpensive ways to go green.

King Tuesdays

June 23rd, 2009 by Thaddeus

Thaddeus lives like a King on Tuesdays. Why Can't You?

Thaddeus lives like a King on Tuesdays. Why Can't You?

Tuesdays are pretty much the paramount of the week to go out, especially if you do that thing called eating, and if you don’t then you should probably try it. Beating the recession with tips from the Screw You Recession! website sometimes requires some sacrifice. However, I always think it’s nice to treat myself without having to burn a hole in my wallet.

I usually wait until Tuesday before I have a good meal because it is definitely when meals are the cheapest and I suggest you do the same. Don’t be surprised. I’m sure between school, work or soccer practice you don’t have time to challenge Chef Ramsay for the crown either. Because of this, I have been forced to learn my way around the week like the back of my hand and I’m telling you Tuesdays are a gold mine.

If you do or don’t decide to spend your Tuesday going to cheap movie night at Cineplex or a cheap Blue Jays game (yes, Canada still has a baseball team), don’t forget to eat. You have two choices: a good restaurant or fast food. But let’s be honest, eating Toonie Tuesdays at KFC or downing the burger of the day forces me to run those extra kilometers just to burn those calories. Fast food is fairly cheap most of the time, so you might take advantage of a blockbuster in the food world and go to a restaurant.

My friends and I are fans of the cheese cappelletti at East Side Mario’s. I would have no problem forking out the $10 to get one of the select entrees and unlimited bread and salad. This is a great place. It’s cheap and for once in your life, you’ll be able to offer your lady something unlimited. For all you hockey loving, beer drinking, or any other type of Canadians, you can either hit up Kelsey’s in favor of all you can eat wings for $16 or go to a Riley’s Bar and Grill and get 29-39 cent wings, depending on the location. It’s a great way to go hang with the guys and even split a pitcher, but if a girl took me out for wings, she would definitely get a call back.

If for some reason, unlimited food offered at these prices does not appeal to you because, well I don’t know why it wouldn’t but who I am to judge, you can go to Boston Pizza for Pasta Tuesdays. There you can become the artist you always wanted to be and create your own pasta starting at $7, increasing with the type of meat you add.

If these restaurants aren’t your cup of tea, give a few local places a call; most likely they will have some deals on. So be like Mike, mark all fifty-two Tuesdays on your calendar, and eagerly wait for the next time you can eat food that you haven’t made in the microwave. That’s the only way I eat.

Just kidding, but seriously.
