Stayin’ Cool At School: Finding Your Discount Doppelganger

August 28th, 2009 by Melissa

I can smell it. The cool, crisp air. The dewdrops on the grass. The smushed up peanut butter and jelly sandwich in my backpack.

Ah yes, the first day of school.

It would be hard to imagine the first day back at school without thinking of our back to school outfit. It was such an exciting time as a child, for it often meant a whole new wardrobe… New shoes! New jeans! New backpack!

As we get older and such new items no longer become a necessity, our nostalgic self still feels a magnetic pull in the direction of oiled autumn footwear and cozy cotton jumpers.

With a pocketbook more closely resembling Kate Bosworth than Kirstie Alley, the ambition to present oneself in spanking fresh new duds on your first day back at the books seems a tad indulgent.

However, since my name just so happens to be Melissa Indulgence Chastity, I am well versed in the way of pampering oneself on pennies.

Back To School At A Bargain: Part 1

August 14th, 2009 by Melissa

When turtlenecks replace tank tops, you know the seasons are changing. Autumn is just around the corner (I’m sorry, I had to say it!), and that means one thing for thousands of children and adults of all ages: back to school. For many, back to school also means a fun shopping trip for some new duds and a stop at the department store for shiny new paperclips.
With the purse strings still a bit on the tight side, I thought it might be nice to share some ideas on how to prepare for school without blowing up your piggybank.

I Heart Strangers

August 12th, 2009 by Andrea

As they say, “Strangers are merely friends we haven’t met yet.” I love strangers. I am aware that this video probably makes me look like a total weirdo (or at least a bigger weirdo than is already assumed) but simply put, strangers make me happy. Whether it is the inspirational stranger that gives you some insight to life, the complimentary stranger that tells you they like your hair, or the hilariously “different” stranger that stops you in your tracks and makes you say “now I’ve seen everything” - I love them all. There are days I literally make it my mission to run into a random person that will strike up a some sort of weird, out-of-the-box conversation. While most girls get completely offended by some sketchy guy throwing out a casual “hey lady, how you doooinnnn?” I actually take a huge sigh of relief and say to myself, “phew, I’ve still got it!”.

So my cheap tip of the day: Meeting strangers is free. You never know who you are going to run into. So get out of your house, put your wallet away and just take a walk outside. Life is waiting to happen.

You Say Olympics, I Say Kittyland

July 24th, 2009 by Melissa

I'm pretty sure this is organic and free-range... you?

I'm pretty sure this is organic and free-range... you?

In 2003, the city of Vancouver rejoiced when they won the bidding process to host the 2010 Winter Olympics. What an honour! What an opportunity for local business! What a—- BUDGET.

And what a budget it was. As of 2004, the operational cost of the 2010 Winter Olympics was estimated to be $1.354 billion. As of mid-2009 it is projected to be $1.76 billion, all raised from non-government sources such as sponsorships and the auction of national broadcasting rights.

In 2004, the estimated security budget was estimated at $175 million. It has recently been revealed the realistic expectation for that same budget is now the region of $1 billion.

My oh my - talk about blowing the bank! I mean, let’s be honest, we’ve all blown our budget a little bit here and there (I like shoes a LOT) … but FIVE TIMES the amount? Combine that with the stock market crash in 2008 and the retraction of funds by large investors, and Vancouver has had to do some serious re-thinking about their goals for fixin’ up this already pretty city.

I Don’t Give A Folk

July 17th, 2009 by Melissa

Okay, so that’s a little bit untrue. I actually care a lot. Too much, even.

That’s why I lament the terrible things in the world that people cause and the very few things that still exist that everyone of all ages can enjoy. (Shoot me, I’m a cynic…) Anyhoo, the truth is, there are a few things that everyone can enjoy- and music is one of them. (more…)

Frugality Rock

July 10th, 2009 by Melissa

What is frugality? To all of us here at SYR, its how we live our lives, whether we like it or not.

According to renowned feminist Wendy McElroy, frugality causes you to reverse the way you think about material things. So - what does this mean in this economy, to all of us recessionistas out there? Well, in this context, anything can be frugal - as long as it is resourceful and brings you closer to your goals.

Anyhow, the other day I was getting ready to head out to meet some friends for some cream sodas and I realized that I simply didn’t have any shoes that matched my ensemble. Oh no! I proclaimed, what to do?

Free Fashion

April 15th, 2009 by Mandi

stylehog

Ok, how excited am I? Tomorrow night I’m going to StyleSwap, “Toronto’s first annual clothing exchange for Recessionistas! I’ve attended heaps of style swaps with my girlfriends over the last few months, and unloaded more clothes than I remeber buying (including the most shiteous tank top that had a bunch of ladybugs with skulls instead of dots on them??) but this promises to be a much more glamorous affair. I’ll let you know how I make out.

In the meantime, check out StyleHog.com for great tips on looking ‘hoxy’ on a budget (ok, fyi I just coined that term right now….a mix between hot and sexy. Everyone start using it).

Job Hunting? Look No Further…

April 6th, 2009 by Mandi

talent-egg1

Happy Monday, Recessionistas!

So here is our inaugural post from our certified Job Expert. Lauren Friese from Talent Egg will be joining us on a weekly basis, answering all your job hunting questions and giving free, wicked-awesome advice on how to score a job you love. The first tip? Don’t say wicked-awesome.

Lauren will be writing a weekly post each Monday so feel free to e-mail us with your questions and we’ll pass them along.

Job Hunting is like Selling Yourself

Hello screwyourecession-ers! I’m Lauren and I’m here to write about job hunting.

A brief intro: In my job, I live and breathe entry-level careers. Over the past year, I have developed a major chip on my shoulder and some pretty controversial points of view. For example, I think traditional resumé writing is ridiculous when you have no relevant work experience, campus career fairs are so 1985, and I generally advise students against going to grad school (even though I have a Masters myself).

I also think that career advice is at its best when it’s based on personal experiences. And so at TalentEgg, instead of giving straight-up advice, we share our own life experiences – what’s worked (and not worked) for us.

And that’s what I’m going to do here. Relatable, practical, you-can-do-something-about-it-right-now job searching tips.

With that, it seems practical to start with Step 1 in recession-time job searching: Realizing that when you’re looking for a job, what you’re actually doing is conducting a sale where the product is you.

Now I know this sounds kind of sleazy, but it isn’t. Think about it – The concept of treating your job search as a sales transaction can be applied to the whole process….

· Finding companies and jobs that fit = Gathering + prospecting leads

· Resume writing = Preparing custom proposals

· Interviews = Sales meeting – your best opportunity to

          a) ask lots of questions to figure out fit

          b) ask lots of questions so you can answer their questions properly

· Job offers = Closing the sale and negotiating price (salary!)

Once you accept this, you’ll be in a fantastic position to confidently move forward toward an awesome and ideal job. More importantly, once you accept this, GET STARTED! Here are 3 things you can do right now:

· Take stock of your Lead Sources: Who do you know that might be able to help you with a reference or referral? What job boards are available? Who’s blogging in your industry i.e. where might there be community around your industry/job target? What kind of networking events can you attend?

· Figure out your Qualifying Criteria: What are the make-or-break factors about the job and company you want to work for? i.e. Are you willing to work weekends? Do you want to work for a big company or a small company? What kind of role would you be willing to accept? What kind of pay range?! Basically - Figure out exactly what it is you actually want to do, and what kind of environment you want to do it in.

· Determine your competitive advantage and Unique Selling Point (USP): What can you offer your target job/company that blows the competition out of the water? What’s your angle?!

Each Monday I’ll build on these core job hunting principles, showing how you can leverage all this soul-searching you’ve done to absolutely smash your job hunt.

A few topics you can expect include:

How to write a Career Launching Resume – based on a personal experience involving dressing up like a little boy for a production of Macbeth…when I was 15.

Why going to grad school is probably a bad idea – including my personal story of the London School of Economics and some pretty hefty opinions.

How to become Google friendly really, really quickly – So that employers find the stuff you want them to see instead of those embarrassing pictures of you in university/college (we all have them).

How to get a (good) job when you have an Arts degree – I have two of them (Arts degrees).

In the meantime, feel free to get in touch with any questions or leave a comment below!

Fur Is Out. Somebody txt Karl.

March 17th, 2009 by Mandi

karl

For once, celebrities across the globe seem to be the last to jump on the current trend train instead of in lounging in the first class like they usually do. Despite the global economic meltdown, Extravagance showed up on the Paris runway in a fur coat and diamond necklace. Karl Largerfeld actually debuted mink covered helmets. I’m not kidding. His rationale? “Now everyone is on scooters, even chic women, so we had to do the helmet,” Um, Karl? Did it ever occur to you that everyone is on scooters since they CAN’T AFFORD CARS? Or because they’re TRYING TO SAVE ON GAS? Or protect THE ENIRONMENT?

Props too, to Anne Hathaway, who showed up at the Oscars in over a million dollars worth of jewellery. Good one, Annie. Way to show the rest of us you’re not affected by this pesky global economic crisis!

So perhaps someone can get in touch with Rachel Zoe, or post a memo at Mr. Chow’s. To all you celebrities out there: Extravagance is Out. Ethics are In. Stop wearing your wallet on your sleeve and come join the rest of us in the econo car.  We’ll save a seat for you.

And an extra special message to Karl: While your $1500 look-alike bear is sweet, albeit a little creepy, if someone has an extra $1500 kicking around, perhaps there are better ways to spend it. Like, on…just about ANYTHING else. xo
