Technology Gets Steamy

Now You Have An Excuse To Pet Your Mouse

Technology has tended towards sleek, streamlined design, which makes it look like, well, technology. However, there’s a movement that’s been going on for sometime, with the goal of adding a bit of romance to the almost obvious form of most technological devices that we use today. It’s called Steampunk, and it hearkens back to the days when showing an ankle was considered hot and if you were one of those gentlemen who needed to pay to see a palm-sized patch of flesh, then you would dial up the number of the nearest bawdy house on a telephone so large that it could be used to knock out an elephant.

Virgin Mobile At LoveCry Part 2

August 5th, 2009 by George

This is Part 2 of my interview with Angel of LoveCry. She sheds some light on the current state of humanity, plus some of her opinions inprovements to already existing charitable organizations. She shows us how through just the efforts of a few volunteers, most of them street kids, they managed to build a back porch for the charity. I’d like to thank Angel for volunteering her time and being a great example of how you can stretch your dollar as far as it can go.

Virgin Mobile at LoveCry Part 1

August 4th, 2009 by George

I vistited Love Cry, a charitable organization, that makes due despite the recession and not having paid workers. Everyone who’s there wants to be there because they were either homeless themselves to start with, or had some first hand experience with abuse or poverty. While this may not be the latest Harry Potter movie, this place weaves a kind of magic that Harry Potter or even David Copperfield himself would appreciate because, at LoveCry, they seem to create something out of nothing. That is, a life where before there was none and a sense of responsibility to the world. If guys like Barack Obama and Stephen Harper owe much of the success of their campaigns to volunteer work, it’s short work to know that charities like Love Cry can benefit even more so.

I will post Part 2 of this fascinating interview tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Gitomer will help your business go YA!

Gitomer will help your business go YA!

Jeffery Gitomer is back to help us save the world, one small company at a time. Well not really but if you have been keeping up with my posts you’ll know he’s a genius and a pretty popular businessman. So if you don’t know him, well too bad, get to know him from his website and learn as much as you can from him. He now gives us some tips on what he does with his business and with his money during the recession. I found this great for those of you that are entrepreneurs, especially during this time. I might not have a lot of money, or maybe even 1/100th of what he has, but I know for damn sure I am going to do something smart with it. I am not going to go through all his tips, as there are quite a few, but here are my favorites with some of my quirky comments.

You Say Olympics, I Say Kittyland

July 24th, 2009 by Melissa

I'm pretty sure this is organic and free-range... you?

I'm pretty sure this is organic and free-range... you?

In 2003, the city of Vancouver rejoiced when they won the bidding process to host the 2010 Winter Olympics. What an honour! What an opportunity for local business! What a—- BUDGET.

And what a budget it was. As of 2004, the operational cost of the 2010 Winter Olympics was estimated to be $1.354 billion. As of mid-2009 it is projected to be $1.76 billion, all raised from non-government sources such as sponsorships and the auction of national broadcasting rights.

In 2004, the estimated security budget was estimated at $175 million. It has recently been revealed the realistic expectation for that same budget is now the region of $1 billion.

My oh my - talk about blowing the bank! I mean, let’s be honest, we’ve all blown our budget a little bit here and there (I like shoes a LOT) … but FIVE TIMES the amount? Combine that with the stock market crash in 2008 and the retraction of funds by large investors, and Vancouver has had to do some serious re-thinking about their goals for fixin’ up this already pretty city.

So You Think You Can Do Something?

July 23rd, 2009 by George

My hero for this week is a choreogrpaher by the name of Tyce Diorio. He created a routine on So You Think You Can Dance this week that was essentially the story of a woman struggling with breast cancer, but told through dance . The routine moved the judges as well as its choreographer, who felt strongly enough about a cause to create a great piece that was both inspiring and beautiful to watch. I’m not a professional choreographer by far–judging by my rap video, you might say everything I learned came out of a Cracker Jack box (no pun intended).

You Are Making a BIG Mistake!

July 16th, 2009 by Thaddeus

Is This You?

Is This You?

The recession may be a major crisis for some people, including the people WITH a job during this recession. This recession has left many jobless but it still has heavily affected those with one. Everyone can see that change is happening at home or in office. The world is changing so much, heck, Mandi or Jer never even gave me or anyone else in the blog army an office. What cheapskates eh! The reality is the business world is changing and who knows what the rest of the year will bring. Some people are waiting to see what happens and will react accordingly. Jeffery Gitomer, a popular author of business and sales books, is saying: if you are waiting you are making a BIG mistake! Are you making the mistake? Hopefully his article can help you re-analyze certain aspects of your life and pick up your spirits in the process.

Joy Apparel: Putting the Joy Back Into, uh, Apparel

July 13th, 2009 by D.J.

joy-apparel
As we’ve heard more than once, those who hope to survive and even thrive during this economic downturn must possess a healthy amount of ingenuity and an entrepreneurial spirit.

Thirty year-old Jeff Woodrow, creator of Joy Apparel, indubitably falls into that category. Listen, I don’t use the word ‘indubitably’ very often. When I use it, it means I’m serious. (more…)

The Toilet Paper Wrap And More

July 13th, 2009 by Lucas

TP: Now my job will get more interesting because of the toilet paper wrap!

Bonjour!

So my whole two-week birthday festivities are over. It was pretty legitimate as the young folks say. It was topped off with a wonderful co-birthday party (once again, cheap and fun alternative to going out to a bar), my girlfriend taking me out to Jersey Boys (amazing show) and I’m going home to Nova Scotia in late August for two weeks.
