I’m Sorry {Your Name Here}

September 15th, 2009 by Thaddeus
This is not going to be easy for me.

This is not going to be easy for me.

I’m writing you this because I think our relationship has run its course. I also really need more space, I don’t like feeling like an elephant in a telephone booth. I hope you understand. I don’t know how to break it to you, but I had to find something else. You know what they say: out with the old, in with the new! The wise Righteous Brothers wrote a song called “You’ve lost that lovin’ feeling.” You might want to listen to it a few times, because I’ve lost that loving feeling.

Sometimes you need to take things a bit slower, and just have fun. Unfortunately, this relationship is becoming too serious for my tastes.Ā It’s not you, it’s me (and the recession ending). Really. It may be a typical line, but it’s true: we just aren’t meant for each other. I may love you, but I’m definitely not in love with you. You’re gonna have to learn to accept that. I’m not sure whether we can see each other again, or if I will blog in the future but, for now at least, I definitely need my own space. I think you get the idea: this relationship is over.

Wish it could have worked out, but please leave me one last comment below to remember you by. The people here who wrote this for me really captured what I was feeling. I mean every word.

Just kidding, but seriously.

Room For Improvement

September 11th, 2009 by Romi

Last week I talked about GOOD’s Harmony Ecosystem chart and its efforts to better the world on a micro and macro scale. It turns out GOOD is not the only organization concerned with putting global concerns into perspective.

The NewScientist site features Blueprint For A Better World. The Blueprint begs the question ā€œAre we getting better or worse?ā€ and seeks to answer it through a series of charts representing different global issues over time. Each chart includes a thumbs up or a thumbs down symbol indicating whether or not a situation has improved internationally.

Looking at the big picture, it seems as though quality of life is improving even in developing countries. (more…)

Smart Shopping 101

September 9th, 2009 by Thaddeus

Professor Dealzmodo still has it.

The photo explains it all.

Well Professor Dealzmodo is back at it again. I know I know this is probably my fourth time talking about him, but you gotta love Sean Fallon. This guy just knows how to save money, and not only knows; he explains it in very good detail. My hat goes off to him. Well it seems like he wants to help us one last time. He explains now that school is coming/here you should be a savy tech shopper. I definitely like my tech gear but it can be expensive sometimes don’t you agree? Well not only does he help you cut corners, he helps you be green too. We never want to forget about saving our environment while trying to get to the next level of War Craft (I have never played it, but isn’t that how it works?). He has created an article linking all of his articles that can help you save this fall. I have touched on one or two before but this is definitely a must read for anyone who loves technology loves to save the environment, or loves to save money. I’m sure that covers all of us.

How To Save The World

September 4th, 2009 by Romi

harmony

I have finally come to the realization that being a caped crusader is not a viable career option.

I have no super strength to move heavy objects, nor do I have the ability to turn invisible, scale buildings, or fly. Heck, I don’t even have shark repellent! The fact of the matter is, I won’t be single-handedly stopping forces of evil from destroying the earth any time soon.

It’s a depressing reality check but knowing that I can do something to slightly improve the world in one way or another makes me feel a little bit better. If I can do it in spandex, added bonus.

What can I do, what can we do? Where do we start? We’ve talked a lot about volunteerism on this site and that’s a fabulous way to give yourself to others but what else is there?

While digging, I came across this site called GOOD, an online community of people looking to, in their words, “push the world forward”. (more…)

Waste Not!

August 27th, 2009 by Romi

One person's trash is another person's...treasure?

One person's trash is another person's...treasure?

Art imitates life; life imitates art.

This has become quite the clichƩ, but it stands true. Art has always been a commentary on the social order by either calling to action or eliciting a reaction to a specific piece or a body of work. With the modernization of art, artists have been given a larger venue to express their philosophies leaving more room for interpretation to those that interact with their work.

When I saw the Waste Not installation at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, my interpretation required a call for action and the SYR blog is my soapbox.

Waste Not, Want Not

August 7th, 2009 by Melissa

images-4

When the world was at war the first time around, the Waste Not Want Not poster was published by the Canada Food Board to encourage Canadian women to preserve perishable foods. Just shy of 100 years later, this same credo applies to current issues that prevail in modern society.

Perhaps not so we can afford to buy more planes to fight our mortal enemies, and maybe not because we are short on flour, sugar, or muslin.

What is relevant to us today is conservation rather than preservation-be it of your money, your energy, or the planet’s resources.

Those precious resources are in the hot seat today- how can you save your money by conserving energy while staying out of the dark?

Canada Is Not Immune to the Water Crisis

August 3rd, 2009 by D.J.
I'd forgive him for wasting the water if he didn't look so smug about it.

I'd forgive him for wasting the water if he didn't look so smug about it.

Hey everyone, D.J. Demers here, back from my weeklong absence. I won’t go into detail as to where I was, but let me just throw a random fact out there: A secret agent could easily fly on several covert missions from Toronto to Vienna to Seoul to Cape Town, back to Vienna, and then home to Toronto in less than a week. Just something worth noting.

This past weekend, I stopped in at a friend’s house to say hello.Ā  In the hour that I was hanging out with this friend, she did a couple of things that made my jaw hang in disbelief. (more…)

I Don’t Give A Folk

July 17th, 2009 by Melissa

Okay, so that’s a little bit untrue. I actually care a lot. Too much, even.

That’s why I lament the terrible things in the world that people cause and the very few things that still exist that everyone of all ages can enjoy. (Shoot me, I’m a cynic…) Anyhoo, the truth is, there are a few things that everyone can enjoy- and music is one of them. (more…)

Thade’s Tech Tuesday: Energy Bills Suck

July 14th, 2009 by Thaddeus

Energy Vampires are sucking not only energy but money out of your wallets.

Energy Vampires are sucking not only energy but money out of your wallets.

I have been on the search for an apartment for the past two weeks. I found many good places, but then I asked how much was the average electricity bill, and in a blink of an eye I was walking out of the place empty handed. The damn electricity bill was as big as D.J.ā€˜s moustache and I have no interest in getting a second job just so I can watch my favorite episodes of Gossip Girl. Electricity bills suck big time, but fortunately Professor Dealzmodo is back to help me and everyone else out there who agrees with my statement. Here are some tips to help you shave dollars of your electricity bill…

Joy Apparel: Putting the Joy Back Into, uh, Apparel

July 13th, 2009 by D.J.

joy-apparel
As we’ve heard more than once, those who hope to survive and even thrive during this economic downturn must possess a healthy amount of ingenuity and an entrepreneurial spirit.

Thirty year-old Jeff Woodrow, creator of Joy Apparel, indubitably falls into that category. Listen, I don’t use the word ā€˜indubitably’ very often. When I use it, it means I’m serious. (more…)
