So I know my post yesterday gave a great deal of serious information and some of you may feel bombarded or worried about fixing your debt. Well it’s Wednesday, half way through the week and I just thought I would give everyone a smile for the day. Check out this video of a new fragrance for men! Women watch this too as it was your very own Romi (thanks Romi) who showed it to me.
If any buddy finds a bottle of this stuff let me know, I’d love to try it.
I'm pretty sure this is organic and free-range... you?
In 2003, the city of Vancouver rejoiced when they won the bidding process to host the 2010 Winter Olympics. What an honour! What an opportunity for local business! What a—- BUDGET.
And what a budget it was. As of 2004, the operational cost of the 2010 Winter Olympics was estimated to be $1.354 billion. As of mid-2009 it is projected to be $1.76 billion, all raised from non-government sources such as sponsorships and the auction of national broadcasting rights.
In 2004, the estimated security budget was estimated at $175 million. It has recently been revealed the realistic expectation for that same budget is now the region of $1 billion.
My oh my - talk about blowing the bank! I mean, let’s be honest, we’ve all blown our budget a little bit here and there (I like shoes a LOT) … but FIVE TIMES the amount? Combine that with the stock market crash in 2008 and the retraction of funds by large investors, and Vancouver has had to do some serious re-thinking about their goals for fixin’ up this already pretty city.
Tonight, Frugal Fashion Week launches in Toronto. I had the chance to chat with Gillian Downes, the FFW producer to discuss the event and all things stylish and inexpensive.
Check it out!
Visit the Frugal Fashion Week website for more event info and the Windfall site to learn more about the charity supported by the event.
When I did a post two weeks ago about finding clothes in your mother’s closet, I received a comment from Giovanna saying, “Try your own closet first, everybody. Go through and find all of the old things that you hate, take a strong pair of scissors and some leather cord and go to town”.This gave me an excuse to go and talk with some girls about how they stay fashionable and cheap. This is going to be a busy week. Hopefully mister sun sticks around so we can enjoy it that much more!
Here’s what there is to look forward to this week:
Halifax Pride—Get your rainbow gear together because there are plenty of fabulous and frugal Pride events going on until the 26th. Free art shows, cheap concerts, drink deals, and a picnic, what more can you ask for?
Fancy-Free Fashion—I mentioned this event last week but may I remind you that Toronto is the new home to Frugal Fashion Week. Check out the thriftiest and trendiest fashion event of the summer!
The recession has bruised the world of couture but that hasn’t stopped the fashion industry from using the economic downturn to its advantage. Malls are riddled with recession sales, high fashion designers are coming out with cheaper lines for big box stores like Target, and Fashion Week has adopted a frugal little sister.
As we’ve heard more than once, those who hope to survive and even thrive during this economic downturn must possess a healthy amount of ingenuity and an entrepreneurial spirit.
Thirty year-old Jeff Woodrow, creator of Joy Apparel, indubitably falls into that category. Listen, I don’t use the word ‘indubitably’ very often. When I use it, it means I’m serious. (more…)
What is frugality? To all of us here at SYR, its how we live our lives, whether we like it or not.
According to renowned feminist Wendy McElroy, frugality causes you to reverse the way you think about material things. So - what does this mean in this economy, to all of us recessionistas out there? Well, in this context, anything can be frugal - as long as it is resourceful and brings you closer to your goals.
Anyhow, the other day I was getting ready to head out to meet some friends for some cream sodas and I realized that I simply didn’t have any shoes that matched my ensemble. Oh no! I proclaimed, what to do?
It seems like everyone is sharing clothes these days.
So I was thinking that I should probably write a post just for women.Since I do love you so much, I wanted to show you common courtesy and provide some tips on how to save money. In case you didn’t know, I have a masters degree in fashion that I received back in 2006 from a Cracker Jack box.I still remember the day, my parents were so proud.Well now it can come in handy, as I have found a great article that helps you look fab with stuff that you already have!
First of all, we all want to look purty. We all like Hollywood (as much as we hate to admit it).
So - what to do? There are lots of ways to make yourself beautiful without spending hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on spa facials, nail treatments and hair trims. But how? And where?
rachel plan weekly meals and buy whatever you can in bulk, hands wash your clothes when ever you can and grow a garden or if you have a family member that has a garden ask if you can get some fresh veggies when there ready to come out
Derekp I think i’ve seen this somewhere before…but it’s not bad at all
Rath You have a decent blog here. I would encourage you to keep writing and posting as often as you are inspired to do so. In the long run, it will really pay off as more and more people will begin to visit, read and refer others. ProExtender

Theresa Waste less food by taking more trips to the grocery store, but buy less. Plan fresh meals ahead, buy what you need when you need it. Also, frequent local markets for great deals!
