I buy books. Lots of books. So many books in fact, that at this point, I will probably have to make it a full time job just to read them all. I think I’m more of a bibliophile than a reader, but slowly improving–that is to say, I’m making the effort to try and actually read everything I have. Why do I do it? I don’t know; maybe there is some security in knowing that if I ever need to identify one of the many species of birds in North America, I can because I have the book; or if I decide at some point to delve into the secret mysteries of the Qabalah (or Cabala), I can, because again, I have the book. The recession has slowed me down a little bit, but not a whole lot. I’m averaging a book a week. I probably need help.
A while back I dedicated one of my posts to books dedicated to managing your money, savings, blah blah blah. But then I thought to myself, wait a second, kids don’t read anymore! What am I thinking?
So now, I’ve decided to compile a list of movies that somehow include money in the theme of the film. Some are 100% about money, others are more so about realizing that life isn’t all about money and some are just about how shitty it is when you don’t have money. I’ve mixed the up list with comedies and dramas, a documentary and a musical. (more…)
It’s already the second week of September. Can you believe it? Here I am wearing my parka and UGG boots thinking a brisk fall breeze will knock me off my feet when another heat wave plagues Toronto. As you may have guessed, I’m sweating like a fat kid in a candy store. Perhaps I should shower. Nah, too lazy. Anyways, Diary, I figured I’d take advantage of this nice weather find some stuff to do outside.
This is what I have in mind:
Art Walk: The ROM hosts free themed walking tours of Toronto areas. This week, you can check out Yorkville and the Annex. I think this is fabulous. (more…)
It’s September and besides back to school, summer ending, and Halloween decorations appearing, it’s an all-new season for TV shows.Don’t lie; everyone always says I don’t watch that much TV because you’re out saving the environment, studying for school, or working.Well that’s a bunch of BS, because it all goes out the window when you watch a series that you completely fall for and then you wind up like me, watching Mad Men (best show by the way) at 3am the night before a soccer game.Well doesn’t it suck when you see a new show that really catches your eye, but you don’t quite understand because you have missed the first five episodes.I HATE that, so I decided to remind you of what’s coming to a TV near you.Well MacLean’s, yes the same MacLean’s that does school rankings, and prestigious articles on the environment, business, health and media have made a list of the five most anticipated shows coming this fall.I think you should check them out ( I added my personal choice) so you don’t fall behind.
For the last few years Toronto has joined the likes of Tokyo, Madrid, Rome and Paris in offering a free and interactive experience of contemporary art through Nuit Blanche; an event that runs from sunset to sunrise. The event stays true to its name by illuminating the night with installations from hundreds of artists from around the city; all for free.
I love watching movies but I’m definitely not that kind of person who will base my movie-going experience on what kind of reviews a film has gotten. Besides, 5 pages for one movie review? You’re basically outlining the whole plot, play by play.
For all of those impatient cinephiles like myself, I bring you Matadoms.com’s Simple Movie Reviews. Although there’s only a small database of pint-sized reviews, the selection is worth a read and in my opinion, should be expanded into it’s own website.
Each review follows a simple format: If you like X then you will like Y. For example: “If you like Zach Braff’s self-indulgence, then you will like Garden State.”
Film festivals exist for the sole purpose of putting filmmakers in touch with a larger audience and film distributors, who can help take a film from relative obscurity, to a larger audience that could help it make some real money. Withoutabox is a service that helps filmmakers submit their films to festivals electronically, using an inventory-free service that saves you the postage, which can go a long way; especially if you’re submitting your movie to every festival under the sun.
Okay, honestly I wasn’t sure what to expect this year at Vfest Ontario. It was at a different type of venue, the weather has been completely unpredictable, and so on and so on… So, needless to say I was secretly a little bit weary.
Now, I know I should never doubt the party that Vfest brings year after year. I can solidly say that some of my MOST memorable concert experiences to date have been Vfest moments. My absolute favourite being the year before last.
The summer-smell was in the air (read: pot and sweaty bodies), the green laser lights kicked in, and out walked Bjork. From the second she entered the stage until the very last note, Bjork had my undivided attention. Never before had I experienced an artist so true to herself. She exuded a confidence that was nothing less than magnetic. I was literally in awe.
I’m sure the hot guy that I was pressed up against for 2 hours and the daytime beers helped a bit, but as uber-corny as that sounds, it was truly a magical show that I will never forget.
This year, I am extremely happy to report that I left with that very same feeling. Vfest you did it again! [article continues after video - click "more"]

14 years ago, almost to the day, I listened to ‘Pretty Hate Machine’ and decided that music was something I wanted to do with my life. I was a little late getting into the band, but it would become more of a soundtrack to my life rather than just another addition to my small collection at the time. Years later, when I was working at a factory packaging textbooks to be shipped out to schools, the album that got me through the bus ride would be Soundgarden’s ‘Badmotorfinger‘, but I would always come back to PHM and subsequent albums as my drug of choice.
Movies like ‘The Lost Boys’ and ‘The Crow’ entered the picture and I found myself becoming somewhat of a creature of the night, with a love for amusement parks at night to go along with the music that I felt expressed things that could only be achieved through sound and image. In short, this video is a bit of an homage to some of those little things that are important to me, but what about you? What’s your story?
I think music has the undisputed power to create memories that are unique and personal to us all. I’d love to hear some of yours.
rachel plan weekly meals and buy whatever you can in bulk, hands wash your clothes when ever you can and grow a garden or if you have a family member that has a garden ask if you can get some fresh veggies when there ready to come out

Theresa Waste less food by taking more trips to the grocery store, but buy less. Plan fresh meals ahead, buy what you need when you need it. Also, frequent local markets for great deals!
