For the last few years Toronto has joined the likes of Tokyo, Madrid, Rome and Paris in offering a free and interactive experience of contemporary art through Nuit Blanche; an event that runs from sunset to sunrise. The event stays true to its name by illuminating the night with installations from hundreds of artists from around the city; all for free.
This year, I’m a part of one called “Mobius”, put on by filmmaker Jason Leaver; the installation will be in the Cabbagetown area on the night of October 3rd, so be sure to check it out! Cabbagetown is one of a few ‘Zones’ that the city has been divided into to help art-goers navigate the installations they might want to see, as there are many to choose from; these include sponsored/funded installations that mingle with the independent endeavors of emerging artists. This year, over 400 artists are a part of the event.
There are some things you need to know before attending an all-night event like this, but most important is to dress for the weather (the night weather) and bring food unless you know of any all-night destinations that are on the route of your art crawl. The site has valuable info about local food and beverage stops in case you’re not that familiar with the city.So if you’re looking for something to do or just looking for something different than the usual art fare, check out Nuit Blanche!
