It’s September and besides back to school, summer ending, and Halloween decorations appearing, it’s an all-new season for TV shows. Don’t lie; everyone always says I don’t watch that much TV because you’re out saving the environment, studying for school, or working. Well that’s a bunch of BS, because it all goes out the window when you watch a series that you completely fall for and then you wind up like me, watching Mad Men (best show by the way) at 3am the night before a soccer game. Well doesn’t it suck when you see a new show that really catches your eye, but you don’t quite understand because you have missed the first five episodes. I HATE that, so I decided to remind you of what’s coming to a TV near you.Well MacLean’s, yes the same MacLean’s that does school rankings, and prestigious articles on the environment, business, health and media have made a list of the five most anticipated shows coming this fall. I think you should check them out ( I added my personal choice) so you don’t fall behind.
Glee (September 9th, Global)- This ironic comedy-drama-musical is a strange hybrid of American Idol, High School Musical, and Popular. The combination of campiness and sincerity might be hard to sustain in the long run, but for now, it’s the place to go for stylized humour, fun gimmicks (including an all-vocal musical score) and lots of singing. In my opinion this sounds like a definite chick show. Mandi?
Modern Family (Sept. 23, CTV)- This half-hour comedy, a mock-documentary about the interlocking lives of wacky dysfunctional families, was widely thought to be the best comedy pilot of the season; it’s like The Office at home. I am quite eager to catch this one as I love The Office, and the fact this series stars Ed O’Neill (Married… With Children) and Shelley Long (Cheers).
Bored To Death (Sept. 30, HBO)- Jason Schwartzman plays a down-on-his luck writer named Jonathan Ames (named after the guy who created the show) who decides to become a private detective, even though he has no license and no experience. He places an ad for his sleuthing services on Craigslist and counts on his knowledge of private-eye novels to guide him as he tries to track down missing people. In each episode, Jonathan’s life as a bumbling detective will intersect with his rotten regular life and relationship. Did I mention that Ted Danson is in the show. Hmm.. with all these actors from “Cheers” coming back, maybe they will have a reunion. Are they all still alive?
Eastwick (Sept. 23, CTV)—It’s an adaptation of John Updike’s novel about three bored small-town women who discover that they have magical powers and that the devil has moved into town. It’s basically a Satanic version of Desperate Housewives, and might satisfy the need for sexy, trashy fun now that Housewives has gotten kind of dull. It stars Rebecca Romjin, unfortunately without her blue X-Men suit that we all fell in love with. It’s also directed by David Nutter whose previous pilots include, The Mentalist, Without a Trace, and Smallville.
The Cleveland Show ( Sept 27)- This one was not on MacLean’s list but in fact was on MY list. You read this blog for my take on things anyway. When I first heard it being about Cleveland and his son moving into a house with his recently divorced high school sweetheart, I thought why didn’t Quagmire have a spinoff. Well after digging around the website and watching some previews I fell instantly in love. This is definitely the editors choice (me being the editor in this case). All I can say is that it looks funny as hell, especially for fans of Family Guy.
So there you have the most anticipated shows coming this fall. What shows are YOU waiting for? I know George definitely has a few interests. I know, I know, there is other more “important” stuff going on in the world, and us Canadians are all waiting to see if we get another NHL team, but TV is apart of our daily lives; even more so when your job is to blog on a website.
Just kidding, but seriously.
