Llamas: The ultimate joy ride

Llamas: The ultimate joy ride

Happy “Things to look forward to” Day! Although we should look forward to things every day, we’re making it official every Monday. I mentioned last week that we needed to stay optimistic even when things aren’t going our way. I know I sound like something out of a Disney film (a spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down?) but give it a try. The mouse might be right.

To help you out a little, I rounded up the coolest, and most awesome events, deals, and other cheap goodness that’ll keep you out of (financial) trouble this week.

[As much as I claim to be an expert in all things fun and cheap, I need your help to make this list bigger and better. If you know of any wicked goings-on in July, e-mail me (Romi.SYR@gmail.com) or comment below and you could be published in next week's "Things To Look Forward To" (a.k.a. you will be famous).]

In the meantime, here is some fun stuff that I came up with:

Toronto Fringe Festival—This is one of my favourite annual events. Fringe is a theatre festival featuring plays in different venues all over the city. The maximum ticket price for any given show is $10 (cheaper than a movie ticket!). I say delay seeing the Hangover for another week, and catch a unique production instead.

The cheapness doesn’t end there, NAY! If you show your ticket stub to certain retailers, you are eligible for some sweet discounts.

Non-Torontonians do not fear, Fringe is a national event! Fringe Fests are happening all over Canada all year long. Here is a complete list of Fringe locations and dates.

Virgin Festival BC—Okay, it’s not until the 25th but who says we can’t start pumping ourselves up this week? I wish I could go to this. The line-up is unbelievable (The Roots!!!!!!). If someone can fly me there for free, that would be great. â˜ș

Harbourfront—I don’t know how they manage to fit all these free things into such a small space. I promise not to be so Toronto-centric next week, but this week’s free concerts at the ‘Front are too hot to ignore. Canada’s largest band (probably), Broken Social Scene is playing a FREE show on Saturday while my personal faves, Holy F*ck, are performing on the 10th, also free of charge.

Calgary Stampede–Cowboys are so bad ass. If you need your fix of bulls, Country music and Wrangler jeans, this might be your calling. Tickets aint cheap though unless you want to watch bucking broncos in the ’standing’ section for $12. Instead of spending all of that money, you should ask yourself: “what would Clint Eastwood do?”. Clint would go to the local petting zoo, jump on a llama and see how long it takes the staff to kick him out of the place. Thrilling AND cheap, just like the actual Stampede.

Free Stuff—I love Google. I looked up “Canada Free Stuff” and  this website pops up. It is the ultimate deal blog. It outlines weekly discounts at grocery stores, national contests, and ways to get free samples. Just don’t become the coupon lady that holds up the line.

Oh man, this is going to be a busy week!
