My hero for this week is a choreogrpaher by the name of Tyce Diorio. He created a routine on So You Think You Can Dance this week that was essentially the story of a woman struggling with breast cancer, but told through dance . The routine moved the judges as well as its choreographer, who felt strongly enough about a cause to create a great piece that was both inspiring and beautiful to watch. I’m not a professional choreographer by far–judging by my rap video, you might say everything I learned came out of a Cracker Jack box (no pun intended).
What inspired me about Tyce’s routine is how he shed light on such an important cause through something as simple and effective as dance. All you really need is one or two people and some talent, but more importantly a want to say or do something important. I think we all have some sort of talent, not necessarily artistic, but we are all artists in one way or another. For instance, some people are good at repairing things or cooking; others are good with numbers and computers. Each of these is an avenue that we can take to use our talents to help people and build awareness of a myriad of causes that affect our world.
On this site, I write articles and make videos that I hope are fun and entertaining to watch, but I also try to put something in there that is of use to someone else. Sometimes just making someone laugh is good enough. We all have bad days and that’s usually all we need. If I can make a person forget about their dork of a boss for five or ten minutes, then I’m happy.
Not everyone is as lucky as Tyce (or myself for that matter) in having a forum where they can express themselves and reach a group of people, but I think that making a difference in the life of even one person is just as good. Over a year before I got this gig, I had a lot more time on my hands. I happened to know a friend who recently received relationship counselling from a local youth shelter and he suggested I write some short stories for a paper that they distributed. It was called “Street News” and even though I was unemployed, I felt like I was doing something worthwhile with my talent. My writing even improved as a result.
We all have a talent. What’s yours and how can you use it to make someone’s life better?
